Jews and Christians believe this is the site of the tomb of The Patriarchs, supposedly containing the remains of the three “Fathers of Judaism,” Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jacob’s 12 sons had formed the tribes of the Hebrews who left Egypt and returned to Canaan. Ten of those tribes vanished without a trace. My theory is that they migrated to countries rich with petrol and natural gas. Those who stayed put became The Jewish People. This fact is powerfully enshrined in fundamentalist Judaism. After the 1967 war, a Jewish city (Kiryat Arba) has sprung inside and alongside the ancient city of Hebron. I only today realized that Israel has annexed Hebron the way it did East Jerusalem and many new settlements that are now cities thriving “over the Green Line.” One more proof that a two-state solution is pie-in-the-sky fantasy.
